How to Manage Money Being a Tourist

100 Baht banknoteIf you are looking to exchange money — see a list of banks in Thailand on this site and list of banks branches in Phuket.

If you are a tourist - do not carry more cash money than you are going to spend during next few hours (in bar or in shop for example). If you are living in a hotel you can try to rent safe in bank nearby to keep large amount of money or expensive jewelry because manager’s safe isn’t too secure storage in most hotels in Thailand. Bank safe rent is inexpensive procedure in Thailand + you can be sure you’ll find your stuff untouched.

If you are planning to stay in Thailand for few months you also might consider an idea to buy cheap safe ($100) to keep your cash, notebook, passport, etc. (unless you know for sure your hotel’s storage is safe).

If you decided to walk along side-streets in evening to find “adventures” just keep a hand in pocket with your wallet: it is best protection from pickpocketers which aren’t uncommon in “adventurous” areas (such as Bangla Road in Phuket or Beach Road in Pattaya in evening).

It is recommended to withdraw money using ATMs by amounts around 15.000-20.000 Thai Bahts at once because you’ll minimise currency exchange expenditures in this case: there are “per procedure” fees which don’t depends on how much money you need (i.e. if you exchange/withdraw money too often — you’ll spend more on “per procedure” fees).
